Great Dane

Great Dane

Origin: Germany

Why this breed matters

The Great Dane is the Apollo of dogs — massive, elegant, and surprisingly gentle. Despite the name, they're German, bred to hunt boar and guard estates. Modern Danes are gentle giants: friendly, patient, and convinced they're lap dogs despite weighing more than most humans. Scooby-Doo is a Great Dane. So was Marmaduke. The 'gentle giant' stereotype exists because it's true.

Ownership reality

Everything is bigger. Food bills, vet bills, car size requirements, the amount of couch they consume. A Great Dane can cost $200+ monthly just in food. They don't need tons of exercise (moderate walks are fine), but they need space because they're huge. The short lifespan is the trade-off: 7-10 years is average, and bloat is the number one killer. Know the signs (distended abdomen, unproductive retching) and have an emergency plan. Surprisingly good apartment dogs temperament-wise, but you need high ceilings and sturdy furniture.
