Bulldog

Origin: England

Why This Breed Matters

The English Bulldog is the breed that launched a thousand mascots — universities, Marines, Winston Churchill's war spirit. Originally bred for bull-baiting (hence the name), they've been deliberately softened over 200 years into the gentle, stubborn couch potatoes we have today. They're the most breed-standard-modified dog in existence, and not all of it has been good for them.

Ownership Reality

Let's be real: the modern Bulldog is an anatomical disaster. Those flat faces cause breathing problems. They can't regulate body heat (AC is mandatory). They can't swim. Most can't breed naturally or give birth without C-sections. Hip dysplasia, skin infections in the wrinkles, eye problems — the list goes on. Vet bills will be high. The breed is so compromised that some countries are discussing breeding bans. That said, if you go in with eyes open and budget for health costs, they're sweet, loyal, and genuinely funny dogs. Just understand what you're getting into.

Buy If

You want a low-energy companion. You live in climate control. You can afford the health costs. You love the breed specifically and accept the trade-offs.

Skip If

You're on a budget. You live somewhere hot without AC. You want an active dog. You're uncomfortable with breeds that can't breathe properly.
